This Monday morning I got a call from a lady claiming to be renting my house and she saw my ad in the Craigslist and if I still in USA or Africa?
The ad which i was not totally aware. and she confirmed that she is working with her Aunt a realtor. Though i told her, we are not looking for tenants now and if required she can talk to my Property Manager. and Then I talked to my property Manager, he said he did get calls asking how authentic we are in renting the house.
I got to know more from my property manager, that that lady is a MBA student and had already sent $800 twice!!!. Which I still wonder how someone would send money without meeting in person or any kind of information, I could not get hold of them to get more details.
Anyway, I am now worried there is someone using my name, created a fake email address with my name. and renting my house in Craigslist.
What Can I do?
Nothing. I searched all over the internet, I could report in www.ic3.org, and talk to my friends. and that’s it. There are several other news similar to rental scam like this, and apparently largely from Nigeria.
I had someone investigate this and give me more details on this:
- A Yahoo email created using my name: vontlinsriprabuc@yahoo.com — of course you can send email to the person who is running this scam.

If you get an e-mail that it highly illiterate and the owners are gone in Africa don’t buy into it. Make sure to meet with the landlord in person or the property managers.

We had the exact same thing happen. My son listed his home on Rentals.com and the ad (including pictures) was stolen from there and put on Craig’s List by this person. We contacted him and got pretty much the same letter that you got. You can report him to the Internet Fraud Division and the FTC as well as your police depts.

I received the same email for a local house for rent. I checked our state’s Attorney General office website and they referred me to the IC3.gov website to make the report.

The exact same thing happened to me yesterday! They found an ad of a house I have for rent and copied it then posted it on craigs list using my name as the contact and an email. Go to http://help.yahoo.com/l/us/yahoo/abuse/abuse.html and fill out the form. They will then send a response email asking you for a signed statement in writing about your complaint. They deleted the fake email account in 1 day.

i’m from l.a. and got the exact same email from a guy named john n heathcliff (johnnheathcliff@yahoo.com) who claimed he’s currently in zamboanga city in the philippines and yes doing missionary work with his wife and only daughter…i did send him $800 through elizabeth de castro from zone 7 zombowood zamboanga city. philippines 7000 (who he claimed was his shipping agent) and now he’s asking for more money from me…i reported him to IC3 and to western union fraud department… he even sent me a fake DHL receipt with no tracking no. and a phony western union MTCN when i asked him to return my money…he said his son died…when in fact he mentioned he only has a daughter…and this was the reason he said he couldn’t send the $800 back right away and asked me to contact another, james white, who he said was in charge of his account and will mail me a check..i didn’t tell him i already knew he’s a fraud cuz i was trying to keep him on the hook and hopefully catch him…
i saw this article : http://www.10news.com/news/13962225/detail.html when i googled about craigslist scam and i already called 10 news phone no. indicated in the article to report the incident…i think they’re trying to catch more of these people…
please keep on posting updated info if anyone got caught… i got the IP address and yes, it’s from the same origin in nigeria…i really wish they get caught and i’m not giving up yet on trying to recover the $800 i sent him…

Same scam, from David Franco, [mrdavid.franco at yahoo]. Same story.
I felt hinkey, so I simply looked up the parcel number, called the county assessor’s office, and the very nice woman working there was able to confirm the actual owner’s name. I contacted them and was, of course, referred to a property manager.
I searched the phone number in the email, it dropped me here.
